Sumi Matcha Bowl

The Sumi bowl was made in a small family-run pottery in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, in the historic Mino Province, one of Japan's most renowned centres of ceramic production. The pieces made there follow the tradition of Mino ware (Mino-yaki).

Sumi is an Oribe-style bowl. The Oribe style is known for its free-spirited approach to form and glazing and its use of many colours. White brushstrokes set against a dark background give the bowl its character. Although Sumi is moulded rather than thrown on a potter's wheel, it's glazed and decorated by hand, so every piece is one of a kind.
